A B C D E F G H ... Hahn Otto Hahn Otto (1879- ) Otto Hahn is the German physical chemist who, with Fritz Strassmann, first split the URANIUM atom by ball arding it with neutrons. Born in Frankfort am Main, Hahn studied at the universities of Marburg and Munich. From 19281944 he was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin-Dahlem. In 1917 Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner, leading professor of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, discovered the radioactive element PROTACTINIUM. Lise Meitner (1878- ), Vienneseborn physicist, professor and mathematician, is widely recognized for her work on the products of disintegration of radium, thorium, and actinium; on the behaviour of sport a rays; and on the nucleus of the atom. In 1939 she and Otto Frisch announced their mathematical interpretation of the work done by Hahn and Strassmann the year before they split the uranium atom with neutrons. Meitner and Frisch also revealed mathematically the reason for the presence of barium, which Hahn and Strassman had identified as being produced by the neutron ball ardment, as well as the reason for the great energy released from splitting the atom. Lise Meitner's work prepared the way for the discovery of chain reaction and the development of the atomic ball .
