Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Arthur Harden (1865-1940), British chemist and Nobel laureate. Harden was a pioneer in the field of sugar fermentation with studies that have led to a greater understanding of human metabolism. Harden shared the 1929 Nobel Prize in chemistry with German-born chemist Hans von Euler-Chelpin for their studies of sugar fermentation. Born in Manchester, England, Harden studied at Tattersall College and at Owens College of the University of Manchester before starting graduate studies at the University of Erlangen, where he earned his doctoral degree in 1888. He then returned to Owens as a lecturer. As professor of biochemistry at the British Institute of Preventive Medicine (later named the Jenner Institute and then the Lister Institute), Harden taught chemistry and bacteriology. Arthur Harden wurde am 12. Oktober 1865 in Manchester geboren. Nach seiner Promotion (1888) lehrte er an der Victoria University in Manchester, an der er auch schon Chemie studiert hatte. 1897 wurde Harden Mitglied der Abteilung f¼r Biochemie des Lister Institute for Preventive Medicine in London. 1907 ¼bernahm er die Leitung des Instituts (bis 1930). In seinen Untersuchungen besch¤ftigte er sich u. a. mit der G¤rung von Kohlenhydraten und leistete wichtige Beitr¤ge auf dem Gebiet der Enzyme . F¼r seine Arbeiten erhielt er 1929 zusammen mit Hans von Euler-Chelpin den Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie. Harden wurde 1936 geadelt. Der Wissenschaftler starb am 17. Juni 1940 in
