Hassel wurde am 17. Mai 1897 in Kristiana (alter Name von Oslo ) geboren. Im Jahr 1915 nahm Hassel das Studium der Mathematik und Physik in seiner Heimatstadt auf. Nach dem Studium hielt er sich zu Forschungszwecken f¼r mehrere Jahre in M¼nchen und Berlin auf. 1924 habilitierte er sich an der Universit¤t Berlin. Von 1934 bis 1964 hatte Hassel den Lehrstuhl f¼r Chemie in Oslo inne. Zusammen mit Derek Harold Barton erhielt er 1969 den Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie f¼r Forschungen zur Konformationsanalyse chemischer Verbindungen. Weitere Arbeitsgebiete Hassels waren u. a. Stereochemie , R¶ntgenstrukturanalyse sowie Dipol messung. Er starb am 13. Mai 1981 in Oslo.
