Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Walter Haworth (1883-1950), British chemist and Nobel laureate. Haworth determined the structure of simple sugars such as glucose . He also determined the structure of vitamin C, and was the first person to produce a vitamin synthetically. Haworth shared the 1937 Nobel Prize for chemistry with Swiss chemist Paul Karrer, who also studied vitamins. Born in Chorley, Lancashire, England, Walter Norman Haworth earned a bachelor's degree from Manchester University in 1906. He earned doctoral degrees from the University of Gottingen in 1907 and Manchester in 1911. Haworth's chief contributions concerned the study of carbohydrates , the substances that provide the body with energy. The three main types of carbohydrates are monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides. Haworth determined the molecular structure for glucose, probably the most important monosaccharide. In later work, Haworth eventually found formulas for disaccharides

La vitamine C put alors ªtre produite artificiellement, puis industriellement, devenant ainsi un produit m©dical accessible   tous. Walter Haworth wurde am 19. M¤rz 1883 in der N¤he von Chorley geboren. Nach Promotion und Habilitation war er Professor am Armstrong College in Newcastle upon Tyne (1920-1925), folgte dann aber einem Ruf an die Universit¤t Birmingham (1925-1948). Seine wissenschaftlichen Forschungen befassten sich vor allem mit Kohlenhydraten . Haworth gelang es als Erstem, die Struktur von Vitamin C zu entschl¼sseln und es synthetisch herzustellen. F¼r seine Arbeiten wurde er 1937 zusammen mit Paul Karrer mit dem Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie ausgezeichnet. Walter Haworth, der 1947 geadelt wurde, starb am 19. M¤rz 1950 in Birmingham.
