related subjects Achievement Biography Werner Heisenberg's high school years were interrupted by World War I, when he had to leave school to help harvest crops in Bavaria. Back in Munich after the war, he volunteered as a messenger for democratic socialist forces that fought and ousted the communist government that had taken control of the Bavarian state. He was involved in youth groups trying to rebuild German society out of the ashes of World War I, including the "New Boy Scouts" which hoped to renew German life through direct experience of nature, Romantic poetry, music, and thought. An unusual start for a great contributor to twentieth-century physics. In 1920 he entered the University of Munich to pursue a degree in math. But the math professor wouldn't allow him into an advanced seminar, so he quit. He transferred to physics. He immediately took an interest in theoretical physicists, and soon met many scientists whose work would dominate the coming decades, including Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Max Born, and Enrico Fermi. One of his chief interests was working out problems involved in the Bohr Rutherford In 1926 Heisenberg joined Bohr at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen. This turned out to be one of the most productive periods in Heisenberg's life. In 1927 he was puzzling over the basic quantum properties of electrons. He realized that the act of measuring an electron's properties by hitting it with gamma rays would alter the electron's behavior. Indeed, you could measure the position of an electron (or other particle) OR you could measure its momentum. But the more precisely you measure one property, the more you throw the other off. He tied this up in an equation using Planck's constant, and called it the uncertainty principle. While many resisted this idea, it eventually became accepted as a fundamental law of nature.

Biography
Werner Karl Heisenberg, the founder of matrix mechanics, grew up in Germany during World War I. Although the First World War had little effect on young Heisenberg, the Second World War proved different. Heisenberg and other German physicists were taken prisoner by American troops during World War II and sent to England. They were returned to Germany in 1946.
Although Heisenberg worked in nuclear physics, his greatest work occurred in the field of quantum mechanics. He founded matrix mechanics, the earliest version of quantum mechanics, and published his works in The Physical Principles of Quantum Theory in 1928. His theory earned him the 1932 Nobel Prize. Heisenberg is probably best known for Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, a fundamental property of quantum physics that proved so essential to the world of science that it carries his name.
Heisenberg's other awards include the Order of Merit and Grand Cross for Federal Services. He was a member of the...

Heisenberg, Werner Karl

Heisenberg arbeitete daraufhin in aller Stille in Leipzig weiter.

Wie viele "richtige" Münchener ist auch Werner Heisenberg nicht in München geboren, aber hier ist er aufgewachsen, und hier haben sich schon seine Eltern zu Hause gefühlt. Die Bindung an die Stadt spielte in seinem Leben eine große Rolle und oft hat er, in privaten Gesprächen und in Briefen, von seiner Liebe zu München gesprochen. "Von meiner Heimatstadt bin ich wieder vollständig begeistert: der dunkelblaue Himmel und die Menschen, von denen sich keiner um den anderen kümmert und mit denen allen man doch ungefähr auf "Du" steht, das gefällt mir schon sehr. Gestern hörte ich die Beethovensche IX. Sinfonie, so schön, wie man's eben auch nur hier hören kann (nicht wegen der Qualität der Musiker, sondern der der Zuhörer)." übersicht var et_easy = 0; var et_ssl = 0; var et_pagename = "mono_buch_Wissenschaft_978-3-499-50240-8"; var et_areas = "/buch/Wissenschaft/978-3-499-50240-8"; var et_ilevel = 0; var et_url = "";
