His particular interest was studying the complexities involved in the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen that produces water. He also contributed greatly to the understanding of chain reactions and chain branching (a type of chain reaction), particularly with regard to explosive chemical reactions. Hinshelwood's work led to the 1956 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Soviet chemist Nikolay N. Semenov
