Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood (1897-1967), British chemist and Nobel Prize winner. Hinshelwood's greatest achievements were in the field of chemical kinetics, which is the study of the conditions necessary for certain chemical reactions to occur. His particular interest was studying the complexities involved in the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen that produces water. He also contributed greatly to the understanding of chain reactions and chain branching (a type of chain reaction), particularly with regard to explosive chemical reactions. Hinshelwood's work led to the 1956 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Soviet chemist Nikolay N. Semenov

Hinshelwood wurde am 19. Juni 1897 in London geboren. Er besuchte die Westminster City School und studierte an der Oxford University , wo er sich auch habilitierte. Von 1937 bis 1964 lehrte er als Professor in Oxford. Die Pr¤sidentschaft der Royal Society hatte er von 1955 bis 1960 inne. 1948 wurde er in den Adelsstand erhoben. Hinshelwood trug maŸgebliche Arbeiten zur Erforschung von Kettenreaktionen bei und untersuchte u. a. Stoffwechsel reaktionen an Bakterien . Zusammen mit Nikolaij Nikolajewitsch Semjonow wurde ihm 1956 der Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie ¼berreicht. Hinshelwood starb am 9. Oktober 1967 in London.
