As a theoretical chemist, Hoffmann studied energy levels in chemical bonds during chemical reactions. He put computers to use to solve his problems and, despite the complexity of his research, was able to explain his theories and discoveries to the nonspecialist. For his work he was awarded the 1981 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Fukui Kenichi Born in Poland, Hoffmann settled in New York City as a child and became a United States citizen. He received his undergraduate degree in premedical studies from Columbia College in 1958. He attended Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in chemical physics in 1962. He joined the faculty of Cornell University in the mid-1960s and remained there throughout his career.

Inicio Buscador Las figuras clave de la historia Reportajes Los protagonistas de la actualidad Roald Hoffmann (Zolochev, 1937) Químico estadounidense. Estudioso del comportamiento de los orbitales moleculares en las reacciones químicas, en 1981 compartió el premio Nobel de Química con Kenichi Fukui, por sus teorías, desarrolladas independientemente, acerca del mecanismo de las reacciones químicas. Su padre, Hillel Safran, era un ingeniero civil educado en el Politécnico de Lvov y su madre, Clara Rosen, diplomada en magisterio. Al comenzar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su ciudad natal fue ocupada por los soviéticos hasta 1941. Entre 1941 y 1944 fue ocupada por el ejército nazi y comenzó la aniquilación del pueblo polaco judío. Roald fue trasladado con su familia a un gueto y después a un campo de trabajo. A principios de 1943, su padre logró sacar clandestinamente del campo de trabajo a él y su madre, que fueron escondidos por un ucraniano en el ático de una escuela durante el resto de la guerra. Su padre permaneció en el campo de trabajo y organizó una fuga que fue descubierta. Tanto él como los que le ayudaron fueron asesinados por los nazis en junio de 1943. De toda su familia, sólo él, su madre y unos pocos familiares más, lograron sobrevivir. En junio de 1944 fueron liberados por el Ejército Rojo. A finales de ese año se trasladaron a Przemysl y después a Cracovia, donde finalmente pudo acudir a la escuela. Su madre se casó con Paul Hoffmann, que moriría dos meses antes de que le concedieran el premio Nobel a su hijastro.
