Although noted for his studies of biochemical changes that take place when muscles contract, and for furthering knowledge of the processes by which cells use energy, Hopkins is perhaps most famous for his discoveries on the importance of vitamins in nutrition.

Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Multimedia 1 item Hopkins, Sir Frederick Gowland (1861-1947), British biochemist and Nobel laureate, born in Eastbourne, and educated at the University of London. He taught physiological chemistry at Trinity College , University of Cambridge. Hopkins was the first to prove that lactic acid is a waste product of muscular contraction and succeeded in isolating the amino acid tryptophane from proteins. In 1921 he isolated the tripeptide glutathione from living tissue and showed its importance in the oxidation process in living cells. Hopkins was the first to demonstrate the existence of substances, which he termed “accessory food factors”, that are necessary in a balanced diet. Today these factors are known as vitamins. Hopkins was knighted in 1925, and in 1929 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with the Dutch hygienist Christiaan Eijkman Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail How to cite this article:
