Encyclopedia Article Find in this article View printer-friendly page E-mail Multimedia 1 item Hull, Cordell (1871-1955), American statesman and Nobel Laureate, US Secretary of State (1933-1944). Born in Overton (now Pickett) County, Tennessee, he was educated at Cumberland University, graduating in law in 1890, and was admitted to the bar in 1891. Hull’s political life began at the age of 19 when he became chairman of the Clay County Democratic Party , and between 1893 and 1897 he served in the Tennessee House of Representatives. During the Spanish-American War he served in Cuba as a captain in the Tennessee volunteer infantry, and from 1903 to 1907 he was a district judge in Tennessee. He entered the US House of Representatives in 1907, where he stayed, barring a brief interruption between 1921 and 1923 when he served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, until 1931 ( see Congress of the United States ). He was the author of the federal income tax law of 1913, and in 1916 he wrote a revision of that law and sponsored federal estate tax legislation. For 18 years he was a member of the Democratic Steering Committee. After

Cursó estudios de Derecho en el Willmington College y después en la Cumberland Law School de Lebanon, donde se graduó en 1891. Al tiempo que ejercía como abogado en Nashville y Celina, entró en la política como presidente del Partido Demócrata del condado de Clay (Tennessee) y, en calidad de tal, fue elegido diputado en el Parlamento de Tennessee en 1892.
