Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Paul Karrer (1889-1971), Swiss organic chemist and Nobel laureate. Karrer advanced the understanding of how the human body uses vitamins by describing the chemical structure of vitamin A as well as several other vitamins. Karrer shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in chemistry with British chemist Sir Walter Haworth, who researched the structure of carbohydrates and vitamin C. Karrer was born in Moscow, Russia, and he earned his doctoral degree at the University of Z¼rich in 1911. An invitation by the renowned German chemist Paul Ehrlich brought Karrer to the research institute Georg Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, first as a research assistant and later as researcher and director of the chemical research division. Karrer studied the pigmentation of plants, including the blue and red colors of berries and flowers, known as

Nel 1937 condivise il premio Nobel per la chimica con il britannico Walter Haworth , che comp¬ ricerche sulla struttura dei carboidrati e della vitamina C Karrer si laure² in chimica all’Universit  di Zurigo nel 1911. In seguito, su invito di Paul Ehrlich , si trasfer¬ a Francoforte sul Meno, dove svolse attivit  di ricerca fino al 1919, anno in cui assunse la direzione dell’Istituto di chimica dell’Universit  di Zurigo. Il chimico svizzero studi² i pigmenti responsabili delle colorazioni blu e rosse delle bacche e dei fiori, chiamati antociani, fornendo la descrizione della struttura delle macromolecole che li costituiscono. Si dedic² poi a studiare i carotenoidi, i pigmenti giallo-arancio che si trovano in cibi come le carote o le patate dolci. Nel 1930 Karrer descrisse la struttura della molecola di carotene (C

Paul Karrer wurde am 21. April 1889 in Moskau als Sohn eines Zahnarztes geboren. Nach dem Studium an der Universit¤t Z¼rich promovierte er (1911) und war von 1912 bis 1918 Mitarbeiter von Paul Ehrlich in Frankfurt/Main . 1918 wechselte Karrer wieder an die Universit¤t Z¼rich (bis 1959), wo er sich u. a. der Erforschung der Vitamine widmete: So gelang es ihm 1931, das Vitamin A in reinem Zustand und kristallierter Form herzustellen; 1939 entdeckte er das Vitamin K (zeitgleich mit dem d¤nischen Biochemiker Carl Peter Dam, 1943 Nobelpreis f¼r Medizin und Physiologie). F¼r seine Arbeiten wurde Karrer zusammen mit Norman Haworth 1937 der Nobelpreis f¼r Chemie verliehen. Karrer starb am 18. Juni 1971 in Z¼rich.
