Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Albrecht Kossel (1853-1927), German physiologist and Nobel laureate who made pioneering advancements in the understanding of nucleic acids proteins , and other aspects of cell chemistry. For his work on proteins Kossel received the 1910 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Born in Rostock, Germany, Kossel studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg, a French institution of higher learning founded in 1538 but reorganized as a German university between 1871 and 1918, when the province of Alsace belonged to Germany. Kossel passed his state examination for medical practice in 1877 and received his doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Strasbourg the following year. His subsequent academic posts included the University of Strasbourg's Institute of Physical Chemistry, the University of Berlin, and the University of Marburg. In 1901 Kossel moved to the Physiological Institute at the University of Heidelberg, where he remained until his retirement in 1924.

Demostró que en la hidrólisis de las nucleoproteínas hay dos componentes: uno es una proteína y el otro el ácido nucleico que, a su vez, está formado por timina y adenina. También descubrió el ácido tímico, la agmatina y la histidina. Aisló las nucleoproteínas a partir de espermatozoides de peces y señaló la relación de los ácidos nucleicos con las bases púricas y pirimidínicas.
