Inicio Buscador Las figuras clave de la historia Reportajes Los protagonistas de la actualidad Richard Kuhn (Viena, 1900 - Heidelberg, 1967) Químico alemán de origen austríaco que fue premio Nobel de Química de 1938 por sus trabajos sobre los carotenoides y las vitaminas. Estudió química en la Universidad de Viena y cursó estudios de bioquímica y de química orgánica en la de Munich, de la que llegó a ser profesor de Química en 1925 y hasta 1929. Obtuvo su doctorado en 1922 con una tesis doctoral sobre la especificidad enzimática. En 1930 fue nombrado Jefe del Departamento Químico del Instituto de Investigación Química Kaiser-Wilhelm de Heidelberg (ahora llamado Instituto Max PLanck), y desde 1937 fue Director de esta organización. Fue también profesor de bioquímica en la Universidad de Heidelberg y de química fisiológica en la de Pensilvania, Filadelfia. Durante ocho años, entre 1910 y 1918, tuvo por compañero al también premio nobel de física de 1945, Pauli Wolfgang. Kuhn realizó importantes estudios estequiométricos de compuestos alifáticos y aromáticos, sintetizó polienos y estudió la estructura molecular de muchos hidrocarburos. Siguió también los estudios de Paul Karrer (premio nobel de química de 1937) acerca de las vitaminas del grupo B, y especialmente de la B2 y la B6. Descubrió 8 carotenoides, estudio su estructura y los obtuvo en estado puro. Aisló la riboflavina y analizó su estructura, y también descubrió el caroteno. Por todo ello, recibió el Premio Nobel de Química de 1938.
