Loewi wurde am 3. Juni 1873 in Frankfurt/Main geboren. Er studierte Medizin in StraŸburg sowie M¼nchen und besuchte auch Vorlesungen ¼ber Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie . 1896 schloss Loewi seine Promotion erfolgreich ab. Sein Hauptinteresse galt der medizinischen Grundlagenforschung, insbesondere der Pharmakologie . Hier vertiefte er seine Kenntnisse ab 1898 bei dem Pharmakologen Hans Horst Meyer in Marburg und habilitierte sich 1900. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in England folgte Loewi seinem Lehrer nach Wien, wo er 1904 zum Professor f¼r Pharmakologie ernannt wurde. 1909 ¼bernahm er die Lehrkanzel f¼r Pharmakologie in Graz. 1921 f¼hrte Loewi folgendes Experiment durch: An einem isolierten, mit physiologischer Kochsalzl¶sung gef¼llten Froschherz wurde der anh¤ngende Vagusnerv gereizt.
