Mann is an island
Little Herr Friedemann and Other Stories, by Thomas Mann
OOP, Penguin (1976)
Little Herr Friedemann ) or by their undesirability among the very people they court ( The Blood of the Walsungs ). It dogs them and promotes them, turning their inner lives into a roller-coaster of emotions of which the outside world rarely, if ever, has any knowledge. As is clear from this collection, the world of Thomas Mann is cold and lonely. Relationships between individuals are really distant orbits around each other in otherwise empty space. Where contact is apparently made, it turns out to be unreciprocated, twisted, or otherwise missing the mark ( Tobias Mindernickel or The Blood of the Walsungs ). Large crowds, on the other hand, offer a safe if banal alternative to painful solitude or the hopelessness of trying to interact with one other human being ( The Dilettante and The Infant Prodigy ). Crowds have their own lack of meaning, or perhaps lost meaning, but characters can sit in a crowd either with no delusions or utterly delusional; this is at least preferable to the constant neurotic questioning of the couple.

Mann, Thomas (1875-1955), self-exiled German novelist and winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature, lived in Princeton for two and a half years 1938-1941, and was formally associated with the University during the academic years 1938-1940. Mann had left Germany in 1933 when Hitler rose to power. After five years in Switzerland he was encouraged by friends to settle in this country, and President Dodds and Dean Gauss persuaded him to accept appointment as a lecturer in the University. While here Mann gave public lectures on Goethe, Wagner, and Freud and guest lectures in upperclass courses on the German romantic movement and the European novel. The University made him a Doctor of Letters honoris causa at a special convocation in Nassau Hall in May 1939. In a moving response Mann expressed gratitude for his new home in America and spoke of gratitude in general: ``To be grateful for all life's blessings, . . . is the best condition for a happy life. A joke, a good meal, a fine spring day, a work of art, a human personality, a voice, a glance but this is not all. For there is another kind of gratitude . . . the feeling that makes us thankful for suffering, for the hard and heavy things of life, for the deepening of our natures which perhaps only suffering can bring.'' During their stay in Princeton Mr. and Mrs. Mann lived in the red brick Georgian house at the corner of Stockton Street and Library Place. Here, working three or four hours every morning, seven days a week, he completed

Mann was born in Lübeck. His father was a senator and grain merchant, but died when his son was only 15. The family then moved to Munich, where Mann lived from 1891 until 1933, with the exception of a brief one-year stay in Palestrina, Italy with his brother Heinrich in his early career. He married Katja Pringsheim, daughter of a prominent, secularized Jewish family of intellectuals. He emigrated from Nazi Germany to Küsnacht near Zürich, Switzerland in 1933, then in 1942 to Pacific Palisades, California, USA, returned to Europe in 1952, and lived in Kilchberg near Zürich where he died in 1955.
He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929, for Buddenbrooks.
He was the younger brother of Heinrich Mann.
He was the father of Klaus, Erika, Golo (Angelus Gottfried Thomas), Monika, Elisabeth and Michael Mann.
Most of his novels deal with the tension between the unsteady,death-loving artist and the law-obeying, life-affirming citizen. Mann's diaries, unsealed in 1975, speak movingly of his own struggles with his homosexual desires, which found reflection in his works. Mann described his feelings for young violinist and painter Paul Ehrenberg the "central experience of my heart".
Some of his works are frequently included in the Western canon.

Introduction
Print this section Thomas Mann (1875-1955), German novelist, essayist, and short-story writer, a Nobel laureate and one of the most prominent and influential European writers of the 20th century. Mann saw himself and was seen by others as the leading spokesman for German values and the chief representative of German culture from 1900 to his death in 1955. His courageous public opposition to National Socialism (Nazism) and the regime of German dictator Adolf Hitler kept those values and that culture alive in one of the darkest periods of German history. Mann’s novels and stories, translated into many languages, have been read, enjoyed, studied, and admired by countless thousands of people from all over the world. II
Life
Print this section Mann was born in 1875 in L¼beck, an important trading port on the North Sea, into a prominent and wealthy family of merchants. But he was far more interested in poetry and music than in the family business or in schoolwork. After his father died in 1891, the business was sold and the family moved to Munich. There Mann began his literary career in earnest, achieving enough success with a number of short stories that his publisher encouraged him to attempt a longer work. The novel that resulted

THOMAS MANN QUOTES It is love, not reason, that is stronger than death. THOMAS MANN, The Magic Mountain The meeting in the open of two dogs, strangers to each other, is one of the most painful, thrilling, and pregnant of all conceivabale encounters; it is surrounded by an atmosphere of the last canniness, presided over by a constraint for which I have no preciser name; they simply cannot pass each other, their mutual embarrassment is frightful to behold.
