Along with longtime colleague William Stein , Moore is credited with developing new methods for studying the structure of protein molecules. Together they shared, with Christian Anfinsen , the 1972 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Moore studied chemistry as an undergraduate at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1938. He joined a research group at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, in New York City, where he teamed up with William Stein. Together they began studying amino acids , the building blocks of proteins. After working with the Chemical Warfare Service and other defense-related agencies during World War II (1939-1945), Moore returned to the Rockefeller Institute (which later became Rockefeller University) with William Stein to resume amino acid research. Moore remained there for most of the next 40 years.
