Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item John Raleigh Mott (1865-1955), American leader of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), evangelist, and Nobel laureate who sought to improve conditions for political refugees and prisoners of war Born in Livingston Manor, New York, the son of devout Methodists, Mott moved with his family to Postville, Iowa, when he was 2 years old. At age 16 he entered Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where he studied history and literature and won awards in oration and debate. In 1885 he transferred to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he became active in the YMCA.

John Raleigh Mott wurde am 25. Mai 1865 in Livingston Manor (New York) geboren. Von 1895 bis 1920 amtierte er als Generalsekret¤r des von ihm gegr¼ndeten Christlichen Studenten-Weltbundes in Vadstena (Schweden), und von 1915 bis 1928 war er Generalsekret¤r des Christlichen Vereins Junger Menschen . Ab 1921 hatte Mott zudem das Pr¤sidentenamt des Internationalen Missionsrates inne. 1946 erhielt er – zusammen mit Emily Green Balch – f¼r seine Verdienste um die Organisation der missionarischen und ¶kumenischen Bewegungen den Friedensnobelpreis. Zwei Jahre sp¤ter wurde er mit der Ehrenpr¤sidentschaft des –kumenischen Rates der Kirchen gew¼rdigt. John Raleigh Mott starb am 31. Januar 1955 in Orlando (Florida).
