At age 16 he entered Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where he studied history and literature and won awards in oration and debate. In 1885 he transferred to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he became active in the YMCA.

Ab 1921 hatte Mott zudem das Pr¤sidentenamt des Internationalen Missionsrates inne. 1946 erhielt er – zusammen mit Emily Green Balch – f¼r seine Verdienste um die Organisation der missionarischen und ¶kumenischen Bewegungen den Friedensnobelpreis. Zwei Jahre sp¤ter wurde er mit der Ehrenpr¤sidentschaft des –kumenischen Rates der Kirchen gew¼rdigt. John Raleigh Mott starb am 31. Januar 1955 in Orlando (Florida).
