Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Hermann Joseph Muller (1890-1967), American geneticist and Nobel laureate, best known for his successful induction of mutations of genes in the fruit fly by the use of X rays. He is known also for his dire warnings concerning the effects of nuclear radiation on human genes. Muller was born in New York City and educated at Columbia University. He taught at the University of Texas from 1920 to 1933, becoming professor of zoology in 1925. From 1933 to 1937 he served as senior geneticist at the Institute of Genetics in Moscow and for the next three years as research associate in the Institute of Animal Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. From 1945 to 1964 he was professor of zoology at the University of Indiana. Muller's research in the field of genetics, which he began in 1911, was conducted primarily by experimental breeding of the fruit fly Drosophila.

Muller warnte vor den Wirkungen nuklearer Strahlung auf das menschliche Erbgut. Muller wurde in New York geboren und studierte an der Columbia University. Er lehrte von 1920 bis 1933 an der University of Texas und wurde 1925 Professor f¼r Zoologie. Zwischen 1933 und 1937 arbeitete er als Genetiker am Institut f¼r Erbforschung in Moskau und w¤hrend der folgenden drei Jahre als Forschungsassistent am Institute of Animal Genetics der Universit¤t Edinburgh. Von 1945 bis 1964 war er als Professor f¼r Zoologie an der University of Indiana t¤tig. Mullers Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Genetik , die er 1911 begann, betrafen in erster Linie Zuchtversuche an der Fruchtfliege Drosophila.
