Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item William Parry Murphy (1892-1987), American physician and pathologist, who won the 1934 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his contribution to the development of an effective therapy for pernicious anemia. This disorder, in which the bone marrow fails to produce mature, oxygen-carrying red blood cells, was fatal when Murphy and his fellow researchers American pathologist George Hoyt Whipple and American physician George Richards Minot , pioneered their treatment. Together they discovered feeding patients liver cured the disease.

Murphy wurde am 6. Februar 1892 in Stoughton ( Wisconsin ) geboren. Gef¶rdert durch ein Stipendium, wandte er sich der Medizin erst in seinem Zweitstudium an den medizinischen Fakult¤ten der University of Oregon (Portland) sowie der Harvard Medical School (Boston) zu – in Boston promovierte Murphy 1922. Er erforschte u. a. die Insulin wirkung bei der Zuckerkrankheit und die Leukozyten erkrankung Agranulozytose ( Agranulocytosis, 1930). Murphy versuchte, die Therapie der pernizi¶sen An¤mie zu verbessern, indem er Patienten Leberextrakte intramuskul¤r injizierte. Gemeinsam mit
