Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Fritz Pregl (1869-1930), Austrian chemist and Nobel laureate, who advanced the field of analytical chemistry with his development of a method of microanalysis of organic compounds. Pregl was awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his contributions to microanalysis of organic substances—the first to be awarded in the field of analytical chemistry. Born in Laibach, Austria (now Ljubljana, Slovenia), Pregl studied medicine at Graz University, where he spent most of his career. His earliest professional years were spent as a practicing ophthalmologist. When he began his research, in 1904, Pregl studied bile acids and protein chemistry. It became clear that existing methods of analyzing compounds were too complicated, lengthy, and inexact for such materials as bile, egg albumin, and urine. Pregl set out to convert the classical methods of elementary analysis to a much smaller scale. The newly developed methods of organic microanalysis required one to three milligrams of materials; the process was not only quicker but more exact. Pregl established methods for the microdetermination of carbon and hydrogen, followed by other methods for determining nitrogen, halogen sulfur, carboxyl, and other substances and a broad range of other organic substances. His handbook on microanalysis

September 1869 in Ljubljana geboren. Pregl starb 13. Dezember 1930 in Graz.
