Americký fyzik, který je spoludržitelem Nobelovy ceny za fyziku pro rok 1975 za objasnìní nesférického tvaru atomových jader. O cenu se dìlí s A. Bohrem a B. Mottelsonem
J. Rainwater vystudoval California Institute of Technology v Pasadenì a Kolumbijskou universitu, mna které v roce 1946 získal doktorát. B. Rainwater pracoval na projektu Manhattan (vývoj atomové bomby za 2. svìtové války). V roce 1949 zformuloval teorii o vztahu kolektivních a èásticových jevù v atomovém jádøe, ze které plynulo, že ne všechna atomová jádra by mìla být kulová. Teorii experimentálnì potvrdil dánský fyzik A. Bohr (syn Nielse Bohra ) a B. Mottelson . Nesférický tvar atomových jader je mimoøádnì dùležitý pro pochopení procesu štìpení jader, pøi kterém jádro osciluje, protahuje se a nakonec se dìlí na dvì menší jádra.
J. Rainwater pøednášel na Kolumbijské universitì fyziku jako profesor od roku 1952.
