Trasferitosi con la famiglia a Zurigo nel 1906, comp¬ gli studi al Politecnico cittadino, dove si laure² in chimica nel 1922 con Hermann Staudinger ; divenne poi professore di chimica farmaceutica e di chimica organica all’Universit  di Basilea, dove nel 1938 fu nominato direttore della facolt  di farmaceutica. Nel 1933 effettu² la prima sintesi di una vitamina (l’ acido ascorbico o vitamina C), e pose le basi per la produzione industriale di questa sostanza. Nel 1936 isol² il cortisone e altri ormoni secreti dalla porzione corticale delle ghiandole surrenali . Le ricerche di Reichstein sugli ormoni furono contemporanee a quelle del biochimico statunitense Edward C. Kendall

Reichstein wurde am 20. Juli 1897 in Włocławek (Polen) als Sohn eines Ingenieurs geboren. Nach Aufenthalten in Kiew und Jena zogen seine Eltern mit ihm nach Z¼rich, wo er 1920 ein Diplom als Industriechemiker erwarb. 1922 promovierte er bei Hermann Staudinger zum Dr. Ing. chem. und widmete sich in den folgenden Jahren haupts¤chlich der Erforschung des Kaffeearomas. Er habilitierte sich 1929, wurde zwei Jahre darauf Assistent Leopold Ružičkas an der Universit¤t Z¼rich und wandte sich zun¤chst der Vitamin forschung zu.
