Ross was born in Almora, India, and educated at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He joined the Anglo-Indian army medical services in 1881 and 11 years later began investigations of the transmission and control of malaria. While directing an expedition in western Africa in 1889, he identified the presence of malaria-carrying mosquitoes and supervised their large-scale extermination. In 1895 Ross began a series of experiments that proved that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes; he also discovered the life cycle of the malarial parasite in the Anopheles mosquito. For this discovery he was awarded the 1902

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Multimedia 1 item Ronald Ross (1857-1932), British physician and entomologist, noted for linking malaria to mosquitoes. Ross was born in Almora, India, and educated at Saint Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He joined the British-Indian army medical services in 1881 and 11 years later began investigations of the transmission and control of malaria. While directing an expedition in western Africa in 1889, he identified the presence of malaria-carrying mosquitoes and supervised their large-scale extermination. In 1895 Ross began a series of experiments that proved that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes; he also discovered the life cycle of the malarial parasite in the Anopheles mosquito. For this discovery he was awarded the 1902 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. In 1913 he became physician for tropical diseases at King's College Hospital, London. Shortly thereafter he was appointed director in chief of the Ross Institute and Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London. Ross was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1901 and knighted in 1911.

Comenzó sus estudios médicos en el Hospital St. Bartholomew de Londres en 1875. Al finalizar sus estudios se alistó en el Servicio Médico de la India en 1881. En 1899 regresó a Inglaterra y trabajó primeramente en Liverpool y más tarde en Londres. A partir de 1890 dedicó su tiempo a la investigación de la malaria, concretamente a la causa y a la forma de propagación de la enfermedad. Los expertos Charles Laveran y Patrick Manson sugerían que ésta era transmitida por los mosquitos. Ross pudo confirmar esta hipótesis: descubrió que los portadores de los parásitos del paludismo eran las hembras de los mosquitos del género Anopheles y mostró cuál era el ciclo vital de esos parásitos. En 1895, Ross llegó a disecar alrededor de cien mosquitos infectados antes de detectar, dos años después, las mismas fases larvarias que Laveran había observado en la sangre humana, y que Ross localizó en el mosquito Anopheles En 1899 trabajó bajo la dirección de Alfred Jones en el Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine y fue inmediatamente enviado a África para continuar sus investigaciones. Los efectos de su descubrimiento fueron inmediatos, ya que se pudo controlar la morbilidad y epidemiología de la enfermedad. Posteriormente, se pudieron establecer medidas preventivas otros muchos lugares del mundo, como la India, Chipre o Isla Mauricio.
