Rous was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and educated in medicine at Johns Hopkins University. He was an instructor in pathology at the University of Michigan from 1906 until 1908. In 1909 he was invited to join the staff of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) in New York City. In the following year Rous isolated a virus from cancerous tissue in a chicken and was able to produce tumors by infecting other chickens. Shortly before World War I he developed a method of preserving whole blood, which led to the establishment of blood banks. Rous was a cowinner of the 1966 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his cancer discoveries of more than half a century earlier.
