The W and Z particles transmit the weak force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature (the other three are gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong force). Rubbia was born in Gorizia, and obtained his doctorate from the University of Pisa in 1957. In 1960 he became a physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. In 1970 he also was appointed a physics professor at Harvard University, and he continued in both positions from that time. The confirmed observation of the W and Z particles in 1983 by Rubbia and his colleagues was predicted by and further substantiated the electroweak theory, which unites the electromagnetic and the weak nuclear forces.

Rubbia wurde am 31. M¤rz 1934 in Gorizia geboren.
