Though a talented experimental physicist, his abrasive personality caused conflicts that often led to career moves. He was an assistant and lecturer at the University of G¶ttingen , then a professor at the technical university in Hanover and the universities of Griefswald, W¼rzburg, and Aachen. He withdrew from academia in 1922 and used his Nobel prize money to finance a porcelain factory, which later failed. Stark’s Nazi Party connections later helped him to win powerful positions, first as president of the State Physical Technical Institute in 1933 and then as president of the German Research Association in 1934.

In 1913 Stark maintained a concentrated electrical field in a ray tube and placed a photographic plate in the path of light rays that passed through a mixture of hydrogen and helium. The light radiated by each type of ion produces its own unique pattern of coloured and dark lines known as a spectrum. The spectra differ depending on the frequency of the light waves being emitted, and the frequency varies depending on the energy level of the light waves. When developed, Stark’s photographic plate showed that the spectral line produced by the hydrogen ions had split into several lines. As electrons moved from one energy level to another, the frequency of the light they gave off changed, creating the split spectral line (

Nel 1913 Stark raccolse su una lastra fotografica lo spettro di emissione di una mistura di idrogeno ed elio sottoposta a un campo elettrico . Una volta sviluppata la lastra, Stark pot© osservare che le righe spettrali dell’idrogeno si erano suddivise in diverse componenti equispaziate.
