Seit 1912 hatte er einen Lehrstuhl in Z¼rich, seit 1927 in Freiburg im Breisgau inne. Staudinger gilt als der Begr¼nder der makromolekularen Chemie. Er vertrat seit 1920 die These eines Aufbaus nat¼rlicher und synthetischer Polymere aus Makromolek¼len. Er widersprach damit der bis dahin anerkannten Mizellartheorie, die einen Aufbau der Polymere aus einzelnen mizellen¤hnlichen Aggregaten vertrat. Es gelang ihm, diese Thesen experimentell und theoretisch zu beweisen und gegen groŸe Widerst¤nde durchzusetzen. Staudinger ¨ considerato il precursore della moderna chimica macromolecolare, bench© alcuni polimeri siano stati sintetizzati prima delle sue ricerche. Egli dimostr² che le molecole possono formare polimeri sia per agglomerazione fisica che per reazione chimica , e associ² la massa molecolare di questi polimeri ad alcune delle loro caratteristiche fisiche, come la viscosit  , scoprendo inoltre l'esistenza di reticoli.
