Stern was born in Sorau, Germany (now Å»ary, Poland), and educated at the University of Breslau. He taught at Technische Hochschule in Z¼rich and at the universities of Frankfurt and Hamburg. In 1933 he moved to the U.S., accepting the position of research professor of physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Stern developed a method of studying the magnetic moments of atoms ( see Atom ), atomic nuclei, and protons by directing beams of atoms or molecules through magnetic fields. For this achievement he was awarded the 1943 Nobel Prize in physics.
