Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Max Theiler (1899-1972), South African virologist and Nobel Prize winner who made major contributions to research on the viral disease known as yellow fever . During the 1930s he developed vaccines that protected millions of people from this incurable tropical affliction. For his contributions, Theiler was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Born in Pretoria, Theiler studied medicine at the University of Cape Town, leaving for England in 1919 for Saint Thomas's Hospital Medical School, London, where he completed his medical training in 1922. That year, he moved to the United States, joining the Department of Tropical Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. In 1930 he accepted a post with the Rockefeller Foundation in New York City. He remained with the foundation until 1964, when he became professor of epidemiology at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Studi² medicina all’Universit  di Citt  del Capo; part¬ per l’Inghilterra nel 1919, diretto alla facolt  di medicina del Saint Thomas’s Hospital di Londra, dove si laure² nel 1922. In quello stesso anno, si trasfer¬ negli Stati Uniti, presso il Dipartimento di Medicina Tropicale della Harvard Medical School. A Harvard, i primi interessi di Theiler come ricercatore si concentrarono sulla dissenteria amebica; ben presto si dedic² alla febbre gialla . Questa malattia, caratterizzata da febbre alta, bradicardia e vomito, pu² danneggiare in modo fatale il fegato e fu la prima patologia della quale (nel 1926) i ricercatori abbiano identificato l’associazione con un’infezione da virus . I malati che guarivano sviluppavano un’ immunit  nei confronti di successive reinfezioni; nondimeno, al principio del XX secolo, in Africa e nelle regioni equatoriali e tropicali delle Americhe questa patologia risultava fatale nel 10% dei casi.
