Thomson was born near Manchester, Lancashire, and educated at Owens College (now part of the University of Manchester) and Trinity College , University of Cambridge. At Cambridge he taught mathematics and physics, served as Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics, and was (1918-1940) Master of Trinity College. He was also president of the Royal Society (1915-1920) and Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1905-1918).

Enzyklop¤dieartikel In diesem Artikel suchen Druckerfreundliche Version der Seite Versenden Thomson, Sir Joseph John (1856-1940), britischer Physiker und Nobelpreistr¤ger. Thomson wurde am 18. Dezember 1856 in Cheetham Hill (Manchester) geboren. Er studierte Mathematik und Physik an der Universit¤t Cambridge . Nach Abschluss seines Studiums war Thomson zun¤chst als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter t¤tig. 1884 erhielt er den Lehrstuhl f¼r Experimentalphysik, den er bis 1919 innehatte. Bereits ein Jahr zuvor, 1918, wurde er Direktor des Trinity College (Universit¤t Cambridge). Thomson erhielt 1906 den Nobelpreis f¼r Physik f¼r seine Arbeit ¼ber die Leitung der Elektrizit¤t durch Gase . Er gilt als Entdecker des freien Elektrons und ist durch seine Experimente mit Kathodenstrahlen bekannt geworden. Der Physiker starb am 30. August 1940 in Cambridge.
