Tsui Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Daniel C. Tsui , born in 1939, Chinese-born American physicist and Nobel Prize winner. Tsui shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in physics with American physicist Robert Laughlin and German-born American physicist Horst Stormer . These scientists discovered that electrons (tiny, negatively charged particles) in very strong magnetic fields can act together to form new types of particle-like units called quasiparticles. When electrons form these quasiparticles, they appear to have only a fraction of their normal electric charge. The phenomenon is called the fractional quantum Hall effect. Tsui and Stormer discovered the effect experimentally, and Laughlin provided the theoretical explanation for the effect. Tsui and his colleague Horst Stormer did their Nobel Prize winning work in the early 1980s at Bell Laboratories. Their experiment was based on a phenomenon called the
