Born in Klerksdorp, in what is now North-West Province, Tutu was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1960. He was named Dean of Johannesburg in 1975 and Bishop of Lesotho in 1977; the following year, he became the first black general-secretary of the South African Council of Churches. In this position he became a prominent critic of apartheid , advocating reform of South Africa’s system of institutionalized racial discrimination while decrying political violence by any group. Tutu wurde am 7. Oktober 1931 in Klerksdorp (North West Province) geboren. 1960 wurde er zum anglikanischen Priester geweiht, 1975 wurde er Dekan von Johannesburg und 1977 Bischof von Lesotho. Zwei Jahre sp¤ter trat er als erster Schwarzer das Amt des Generalsekret¤rs des S¼dafrikanischen Kirchenrates an. 1984 erhielt Tutu den Friedensnobelpreis f¼r seinen Kampf gegen die s¼dafrikanische Apartheid politik mit friedlichen Mitteln. Er wurde am 13. November 1984 zum ersten schwarzen Bischof von Johannesburg ernannt, seit 1986 ist er der erste schwarze Erzbischof von Kapstadt und somit das Oberhaupt der anglikanischen Kirche in S¼dafrika. Ein Jahr darauf wurde er Vorsitzender der Allafrikanischen Kirchenkonferenz. Er ver¶ffentlichte 1982 Crying in the wilderness.
