Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Selman Abraham Waksman (1888-1973), American microbiologist and Nobel laureate, who discovered streptomycin . Waksman was born in Priluki, Ukraine, but immigrated to the United States in 1910 and became an American citizen in 1916. Educated at Rutgers University and the University of California, he joined the faculty of Rutgers in 1918. In 1958 he was named professor emeritus of microbiology and director emeritus of the Institute of Microbiology, of which he had been director since its creation in 1949. He also was a marine bacteriologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1930-42), a microbiologist at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (1921-54), and a consultant to several federal agencies. Waksman started research into soil microorganisms at an early age, and his experiments on antibacterial molds resulted in the announcement of the discovery in 1944 of streptomycin, to which he was the first to apply the term

Waksman was born in Priluki, Ukraine, but emigrated to the United States in 1910 and became an American citizen in 1916. Waksman naquit   Prilouki, en Ukraine, ©migra aux ‰tats-Unis en 1910 et devint citoyen am©ricain en 1916. Il suivit ses ©tudes   l'universit© de Rutgers et   l'universit© de Californie, puis rejoignit l'universit© de Rutgers comme enseignant en 1918. En 1958, il fut nomm© professeur honoraire de microbiologie et directeur honoraire de l'Institut de microbiologie qu'il dirigea depuis sa cr©ation en 1949. Il fut ©galement bact©riologiste des sols   l'institut oc©anographique de Woods Hole (1930-1942), microbiologiste   la station exp©rimentale agricole de New Jersey (1921-1954) et consultant aupr¨s de plusieurs agences f©d©rales am©ricaines. Waksman fut un pr©curseur dans la recherche des micro-organismes du sol et ses exp©riences sur les moisissures antibact©riennes lui permirent de d©couvrir en 1944 la streptomycine ,   laquelle il donna pour la premi¨re fois le nom d' antibiotique . Nel 1910 si trasfer¬ nel New Jersey dove, nel 1915, presso il Rutgers College di New Brunswick, consegu¬ la laurea in agronomia . Divent² quindi ricercatore in batteriologia del suolo , lavorando nella stessa universit ; nel 1916 ottenne la cittadinanza statunitense. Dopo aver ottenuto anche il Ph.D. in biochimica, accett² un incarico in qualit  di microbiologo; quindi divenne professore associato nel 1925 e titolare della cattedra di microbiologia nel 1930 presso il Rutgers College. Nel 1949 assunse la carica di direttore dell’istituto di microbiologia, che occup² fino al 1958, anno del suo ritiro. In questo periodo, inoltre, si occup² di microbiologia marina, organizzando nel 1931 una divisione di batteriologia marina alla Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, con la quale collabor² fino al 1942. Gli studi di Waksman furono particolarmente rivolti alla comprensione della relazione tra fertilit  del terreno e microrganismi in esso presenti, e all’approfondimento della conoscenza delle reazioni
