Wilson invented the cloud chamber ( see Particle Detectors ), which gave the first pictures of the paths of subatomic particles ( see Elementary Particles ) and became an essential tool in the fields of atomic and meteorological physics ( see Atom Meteorology ). For his discovery of the method of making the paths of electrically charged particles visible by the condensation of water vapor, Wilson shared the 1927

He was born on February 14, 1869, in Glencorse, near Edinburgh, Scotland. After his father’s death, the family moved to Manchester. He was educated at Owens College (later renamed the Victoria College of Manchester) where he studied zoology, and at Cambridge University where he studied physics and chemistry. He graduated in 1892, and after brief spells as a demonstrator and private coach at Cambridge, and then as a science teacher at Bradford Grammar School, he returned to Cambridge to teach physics to medical students. His main interest was meteorological physics. He decided to develop the work of another Scottish physicist, John Aitken, on simulating clouds in the laboratory. Aitken showed in 1888 that when compressed air was allowed to expand suddenly a cloud formed around dust particles in the air. The dust particles acted as nuclei on which the water vapour condensed. Building on this, Wilson constructed his first cloud chamber in the Cavendish Laboratory in 1895. The cloud chamber formed clouds even when no dust particles were present (

Continu² tuttavia a fare ricerca, pubblicando i suoi ultimi scritti all’et  di 87 anni.
