Windaus wurde am 25. Dezember 1876 in Berlin geboren. Nach Abschluss der Schule begann er 1895 mit dem Studium der Medizin in Berlin, das er in Freiburg im Breisgau fortsetzte. Dort verlagerte er seinen Studienschwerpunkt auf die Chemie . 1913 wurde er Professor f¼r angewandte medizinische Chemie in Innsbruck und von 1915 bis 1944 Professor f¼r Chemie und Direktor des Allgemeinen Chemischen Instituts an der Universit¤t G¶ttingen.
