Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Robert Burns Woodward (1917-1979), American chemist and Nobel laureate, noted for his work in chemical synthesis. Woodward was born in Boston, and educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1950 to 1979 he taught chemistry at Harvard University. In 1963 he became director of the Woodward Research Institute in Basel, Switzerland. With the American chemist William von Eggers Doering, he synthesized quinine (used in the treatment of malaria) in 1944. Woodward synthesized (1951) cholesterol (an important component of animal cell membranes) and cortisone (used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis) and subsequently supervised (1947-1954) the research that led to the synthesis of strychnine (used both as a poison and as a stimulant to the nervous system). He was head of a research team that synthesized (1956) the tranquilizing drug reserpine. For his work in chemical synthesis, he was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He is known also for his research on antibiotics.
