Ziegler developed catalysts that aid in the manufacture of plastics with greater uniformity, hardness, strength, and resistance to heat. Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Multimedia 1 item Karl Ziegler (1898-1973), German chemist and Nobel laureate. Ziegler's work with catalysts see Catalysis ), substances that accelerate chemical reactions, made valuable contributions to the field of plastics , helping develop such products as polypropylene, artificial fibers, and synthetic rubbers . For his discovery of a catalyst that produced a tougher, harder plastic and revolutionized the plastics industry, Ziegler was awarded the 1963 Nobel Prize in chemistry, which he shared with Italian chemist Giulio Natta Ziegler was born in Helsa, Germany, the son of a Lutheran minister. He conducted his entire education at the University of Marburg in Germany, receiving a Ph.D. degree in chemistry in 1920. After receiving his academic certification in 1923, he became a lecturer at Marburg. Between 1925 and 1943, Ziegler taught at the Universities of Frankfurt, Heidelburg, and Halle. In 1943 he became the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Coal Research in M¼lheim au der Ruhr, Germany, and spent the rest of his career there, retiring from the institute in 1969.

Conseguita la laurea in chimica all’Universit  di Marburgo, vi rimase come insegnante prima di trasferirsi a Heidelberg e successivamente all’Universit  di Halle an der Saale. Nel 1943 assunse la direzione delle ricerche sul carbone al Max-Planck Institut (a quel tempo Kaiser-Wilhelm Institut) dove condusse le sue ricerche sull’uso di nuovi catalizzatori nella sintesi di numerosi polimeri Nel 1963 condivise con Giulio Natta il premio Nobel per la chimica come riconoscimento dell’attivit  di ricerca nel campo delle materie plastiche e di altri composti sintetici di importanza commerciale.
