Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Richard Adolf Zsigmondy (1865-1929), Austrian-born German chemist and Nobel laureate. Zsigmondy contributed greatly to the understanding of colloids , solutions in which the particles are extremely small and remain suspended in a gas, liquid, or solid. Zsigmondy was awarded the 1925 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on colloid chemistry. Born in Vienna, Austria, Zsigmondy received his doctoral degree in organic chemistry from the University of Munich in 1890. He lectured on chemical technology at the Technische Hochschule in Graz and later was appointed as professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of G¶ttingen. In between the two teaching posts, he worked at the Schott Glass Manufacturing Company in Jena. During his industrial work with glass, Zsigmondy became interested in colored glass, which owes its color and opaqueness to colloids. Such particles are not visible to the naked eye and Zsigmondy set out to make the particles visible by developing an ultramicroscope with a dark field illumination. This special kind of illumination made the individual particles luminous by scattered light that reaches the eye in much the same fashion that moving dust particles are illuminated in a sunbeam.
