    doi:10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199279128.001.0001 Abstract: This book presents eighteen essays on the philosophers and schools of the Hellenistic and Roman periods: Epicureans, Stoics, and Sceptics. The discussion ranges over four centuries of innovative and challenging thought in ethics and politics, psychology, epistemology, and cosmology. The focus is on the distinctive contributions and methodologies of individual thinkers, notably Epicurus, Zeno, Pyrrho, Arcesilaus, Lucretius, Cicero, Seneca, and Epictetus. Placing their philosophy in its cultural context, and considering it in relation to the earlier ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the author invites readers to imagine themselves choosing between Stoicism and Epicureanism as philosophies of life. All but one of these pieces has been previously published in periodicals or conference volumes, but the author has revised and updated everything, and has also added postscripts to many of the essays.

Epicurus of Samos )(342/1-271/0 BC), son of Neocles and Chaerestrate, was born seven years after Plato's death. He was an ancient sage who left us an enduring message of optimism. He grew up in the Athenian colony of Samos . He was a student of Pamphilus and probably also of Praxiphanes. He was about 19 years old when Aristotle died, and he studied philosophy under followers of Democritus and Plato. Epicurus founded his first philosophical schools in Mytilene and Lampsacus , before moving to Athens around 306 BC. There Epicurus founded the Garden , a combination of philosophical community and school. The residents of the Garden put Epicurus' teachings into practice. Epicurus died from kidney stones according to references I have found (Did the Greeks have a knowledge about kidney stones and how?) around 271 or 270 BC. His philosophy conveyed the ultimate conviction that individuals can live in serene happiness, fortified by the continual experience of easily obtainable pleasures. eath, therefore, the most awful of evils, is nothing to us, seeing that, when we are, death is not come, and, when death is come, we are not..

PURSUING HAPPINESS by Lee Holmes Epicurus (341-270 BCE) a Greek philosopher, was born on the island of Samos. In 306 he moved to Athens for his required military training of 2 years. His home garden was turned into a school (known as "The Garden") where he taught his philosophy. His followers who came from all over Greece and Asia Minor were known as "the philosophers of the garden." Unlike the Academy of Plato and the Lyceum of Aristotle "The Garden" admitted women.
The Epicurean philosophy was to secure tranquillity. Epicurus maintained that pleasure was "the freedom from pain and fear". Intellectual pleasures were more important than the sensual ones but essentially pleasure was what humans should strive for. The greatest sources of fear were religion and death. He taught that if we conquered our fear of gods, death and the afterlife we could achieve true happiness.
Epicurus did believe in gods but claimed that they did not interfere with the affairs of the human world.

Epicurus and Progress on Netflix Prize
Many of you buy and rank books, movies on the web, you click on links, bookmark them, blog about them. By doing this, you are leaving traces behind. The traces are of great help to those who will find themselves in the same situation as you. Personalization technology tries to help you navigate the choices using the actions of people who were there before you, and with the the implicit (clicks or purchases you've made) or explicit (preferences you've expressed) knowledge about yourself. Greg Linden's blog is an excellent source of insightful posts on personalization technology. A while ago he posted a link to a collection of material from KDD about the Netflix Prize : a challenge where one has to predict how much you will like a particular movie based on your history of movies you've seen and based on others' ratings of movies they've seen. What's notable is that some of the current competition leaders have written extensive papers about their approach. BellKor's approach is quite simple and combines nearest-neighbor ideas with a more global factor model. On the other hand

Encyclopedia of World Biography on Epicurus Epicurus (342-270 BC) was a Greek philosopher and the founder of Epicureanism. He was the first of the overt therapy philosophers and an upholder of the atomic theory. Epicurus was born either in Samos or in Athens. He spent his youth in the Athenian colony of Samos, and at the age of 18 he made his way to Athens. In the upheaval resulting from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC), the Athenian colonists, including Epicurus's father, Neocles, were driven out of Samos. Epicurus rejoined his father in Colophon and spent the next several years in Colophon, Lampsacus, and Mytilene, gathering disciples to his own emerging philosophical doctrines Written Works Epicurus's output was very large; Diogenes Laertius, his principal biographer, lists 40 works, one of them

Epicurus, 341-270 B.C.
Epicurus was born of Athenian parents on the island of Samos. He began his philosophical studies at an early age on the islands of the Aegean and the coast of Asia Minor, where he encountered the followers of Plato and Democritus. He first taught at Mytilene, on Lesbos (c.311), and soon moved to Lampsacus on the Hellespont. Around 307 he established in Athens an Epicurean community called the Garden. The Garden became the prototype of most Epicurean groups at the time. Its members included women and at least one slave. The fact that the Epicureans accepted courtesans exposed them to the ridicule of their opponents. However, even the enemies of Epicurus admired their ability to cultivate such close friendships. After his death in 270, the followers of Epicurus celebrated his memory at a monthly feast and his teaching spread rapidly throughout the Greek world. Three letters containing summaries of Epicurean doctrine have been preserved in Diogenes Laertius' Life of Epicurus (see below): To Herodotus (on atomic theory);

The Garden of Afflictions, Chapter VI, §16-17 Epicurus and Marx th Thesis on Feuerbach . Everything leads us to believe that the time Marx devoted to the study of the philosophy of Epicurus – the subject of his doctoral thesis – has left on the final version of Marxism much deeper traces than what is generally supposed by scholars and the mature Karl Marx would like to let show. The Marxist symbiosis of theory and practice does not come from Hegel – it is actually an Epicurean inheritance. However, what happens is that this symbiosis, abolishing the normal distance between the plane of action and that of speculation, suppresses, in both Marxist and Epicurean Philosophy, the difference between the actual and the possible, precipitating us into a hallucinatory crisis where the theoretical detachment which is the foundation of the very notion of objective truth disappears. The desire, the impetus, the ambition – either of the individual soul or of the revolutionary masses – becomes the sole foundation of a world vision in which theory has no purpose, except as a rhetoric stimulant of practical action, or, once any given action has been taken, to endorse whatever resulted from it. Even if the effects of any such action are quite different from what had been expected, there will not be enough critical detachment to appreciate them, and they will not only be accepted but also celebrated as normal and desirable: theory here has no independent value, being reduced to an
