French philosopher and social historian; a leading member of the poststructuralist movement. His studies of modernity focus on deviance and the control of deviance (sexuality, crime, madness), and on discourse . In his famous study of the Western European prison system (1975), he emphasizes the technologies of control that are designed to discipline prison inmates, and generalizes these conclusions to many other institutions in Capitalist society, including schools and work-places. Through discipline, power is inscribed in the body , by means of quasi-military exercises that partition up and specify bodily movements in space and time . This part of Foucault's work is reminiscent of Bourdieu 's writings on habitus . In his work on discourse and discursive formations, Foucault describes the mechanisms through which themes of discourse (discursive objects) become established and "real" in public communication - a prime example is the "creation" of sexuality as a theme of public debate in the 19th century (1978). In order to understand the genesis and development of discursive themes, Foucault recommends that one engage in an "archaeology of knowledge". Foucault's opus is large and varied, and includes such jewels as the short deconstructive essay on Magritte ( Ceci n'est pas une pipe Sample quote To browse texts on

Name that philosopher
So I'm cruising department websites while working on job applications, and I see this page which is decorated with unlabeled pictures of philosophers. I cannot recognize the last three on the lower right. Also, I'm assuming the picture on the far left is Wittgenstein on a bad hair day, but it is not a photo I've seen before. Any ideas? I believe the dude on the far lower right is Stanley Cavell of Harvard, although what he's doing up there with all those others is beyond me.
Looking at the filenames of the images is sort of helpful in this case. 12:44 PM

Foucault, Michel Foucault, Michel (1926-1984), French philosopher, who attempted to show that the basic ideas that people normally take to be permanent truths about human nature and society change in the course of history. His studies challenged the influence of the German political philosopher Karl Marx and the Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Foucault offered new concepts that challenged people's assumptions about prisons, the police, insurance, care of people with mental illnesses, gay rights, and welfare. Born in Poitiers, Foucault studied philosophy and psychology at the elite ‰cole Normale Sup©rieure in Paris. During the 1960s, he served as head of the philosophy departments at the University of Clermont-Ferrand and the University of Vincennes (officially known as the Vincennes Experimental University Centre). In 1970 he was elected to the highest academic post in France, at the Coll¨ge de France, where he took the title of Professor of the History of Systems of Thought. During the 1970s and 1980s his international reputation grew as he lectured all over the world. The main influences on Foucault's thought were the German philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger. Nietzsche maintained that human behaviour is motivated by a will to power and that traditional values had lost their power over society. Heidegger criticized what he called “our current technological understanding of being”. Foucault's thought explored the shifting patterns of power within a society and the ways in which power relates to the self. He investigated the changing rules governing the kind of claims that could be taken seriously as true or false at different times in history. He also studied how everyday practices enabled people to define their identities and systematize knowledge; events may be understood as being produced by nature, by human effort, or by God. Foucault argued that each way of understanding things had its advantages and its dangers.

    Madness and Civilization
    The Birth of the Clinic
Foucault's second major book, The Birth of the Clinic: An Archaeology of Medical Perception (Naissance de la clinique: une archeologie du regard medical in French) was published in 1963 in France, and translated to English in 1973. Picking up from Madness and Civilization, Birth of the Clinic traces the development of the medical profession, and specifically the institution of the medical clinic or hospital.
    The Order of Things
The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences is the English title of the French Les Mots et les choses: un archeologie des sciences humaines, published in 1966, and translated to English in 1970. It is this book that brought Foucault to prominence as an intellectual figure in France. It was attacked by Jean-Paul Sartre as 'the last rampart of the bourgeoisie'. The main thesis of the book was to show how there were in all periods certain underlying conditions of truth that constituted what was acceptable as, for example, scientific discourse, and that that changed over time, in large shifts, from one episteme to another.
    The Archaeology of Knowledge
Published in 1969, this volume was Foucault's main excursion into methodology. He wrote it in order to deal with the reception that Les Mots et les choses had received.
