Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)
Hobbes was an English philosopher whose political philosophy dominated the 17th century and continues to have a major influence today. Thomas Hobbes was born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, on 5 April 1588, the son of a clergyman. His father left the family in 1604 and never returned, so a wealthy uncle sponsored Hobbes' education at Oxford University. In 1608, Hobbes became tutor to William Cavendish, later Earl of Devonshire. The Cavendish family were to be Hobbes' patrons throughout his life. In 1610, Cavendish and Hobbes travelled to Europe together, visiting Germany, France and Italy. After Cavendish died, Hobbes obtained another position but later became tutor to Cavendish's son. During these years he travelled to Europe twice more, meeting leading thinkers including the astronomer Galileo and the philosopher Descartes. In 1640, with England on the brink of civil war, the Royalist Hobbes fled to Paris, fearing the reaction of the Long Parliament to his writing. He remained in exile for 11 years. Between 1646 and 1648, Hobbes was a mathematics tutor to Charles, Prince of Wales (the future Charles II) who was also in exile.

THOMAS HOBBES QUOTES They that are discontented under monarchy, call it tyranny; and they that are displeased with aristocracy, call it oligarchy: so also, they which find themselves grieved under a democracy, call it anarchy, which signifies the want of government; and yet I think no man believes, that want of government, is any new kind of government. Introduction Hobbes, Thomas (1588-1679), English philosopher, scientist, poet, historian, and literary critic. One of the most influential of those thinkers who suppose that our obligations to obey governments depend on a social contract. In Hobbes’s contract we trade obedience for security. He is associated in moral philosophy with egoism—the doctrine that what is right is what is in our self-interest; and in metaphysics with materialism—only matter is real—and determinism—our actions are the inevitable products of impersonal causes. II. Life Born in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, on April 5, 1588, Hobbes was the son of a vicar who left his parish and his family in disgrace when Hobbes was a child. Helped by his uncle to continue to Oxford after his schooling, he worked for most of his life for the wealthy and influential Cavendish family, the dukes of Devonshire. For about 20 years from 1608, he served as tutor and companion for successive generations of male heirs to the Devonshire title. This involved him in guiding travel to the Continent—part of the upbringing of the English nobility. Hobbes also acted as business agent, counsellor, and resident intellectual and translator for the Cavendishes. He was enlisted to help them in their political projects, getting involved on the king’s side in the disputes between Charles I and Parliament over raising money for military action.
