  • Hume is widely regarded as the third and most radical
of the British empiricists, after John Locke and George Berkeley.
Like Locke and Berkeley, Hume argued that all knowledge results
from our experiences and is not received from God or innate to our
minds. This kind of empiricism led to today’s “scientific method,”
which holds that knowledge should be based on observations rather
than intuition or faith. Radical empiricism went further, arguing
that our knowledge is nothing more than the sum of our experiences.
Unlike Locke and Berkeley, Hume removed God from the equation completely
and argued forcefully against the possibility of his existence as
    his contemporaries envisioned it.

David Hume HUME, DAVID, in some of the earlier transactions of his own time, and still almost nothing is known of his history. The indefatigable Wodrow has preserved many scattered hints regarding him in his Biographical Collections in the library of Glasgow college, and except this we are not aware of any attempt at a lengthened biographical sketch of him. In drawing up the following, we shall take many of our facts from that biography, referring also to the excellent works of Dr M’Crie, and occasionally supplying deficiencies from the few incidental notices of himself in Hume’s works. David Hume, it is probable, was born about, or a few years prior to, the period of the Reformation. His father was Sir David Hume, or Home, of Wedderburn, the representative of an old and distinguished family in the south of Scotland. His mother was Mary Johnston, a daughter of Johnston of Elphinstone. This lady died early, and her husband, after having married a second wife, who

DAVID HUME QUOTES What we call a mind is nothing but a heap or collection of different perceptions, united together by certain relations and supposed, though falsely, to be endowed with a perfect simplicity and identity. DAVID HUME, A Treatise of Human Nature If suicide be supposed a crime, 'tis only cowardice can impel us to it. If it be no crime, both prudence and courage should engage us to rid ourselves at once of existence, when it becomes a burden. DAVID HUME, Essays on Suicide and the Immortality of the Soul When suicide is out of fashion we conclude that none but madmen destroy themselves; and all the efforts of courage appear chimerical to dastardly minds ... Nevertheless, how many instances are there, well attested, of men, in every other respect perfectly discreet, who, without remorse, rage, or despair, have quitted life for no other reason than because it was a burden to them, and have died with more composure than they lived? DAVID HUME, Essays on Suicide and the Immortality of the Soul Where ambition can be so happy as to cover its enterprizes, even to the person himself, under the appearance of principle, it is the most incurable and inflexible of all human passions.

Life and Writings From 1734 to 1737 Hume occupied himself intensively with the problems of speculative philosophy, writing during this period his most important philosophical work, A Treatise of Human Nature (3 vols., 1739-1740), which embodies the essence of his thinking. In spite of its importance, this work was ignored by the public. As Hume himself put it, it “fell dead-born from the press”, probably because of its abstruse style. Hume's later works were written in the lighter essay or dialogue forms that were popular at that time. After the publication of the Treatise, Hume returned to his family estate in Berwickshire; there he turned his attention to the problems of ethics and political economy and wrote Essays Moral and Political (2 vols., 1741-1742), which attained immediate success. He failed to obtain an appointment to the faculty of the University of Edinburgh, probably because, even early in his career, he was regarded as a religious sceptic. Hume became, successively, tutor to the insane Marquis of Annandale and judge advocate to a British military expedition to France. His Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding (afterwards entitled An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding ) appeared in 1748. This book, perhaps his best-known work, is in effect a condensation of the first part of the

David Hume (April 26, 1711 – August 25, 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, economist, and historian who was one of the most important figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. Historians most famously see Humean philosophy as a thoroughgoing form of skepticism, but many commentators have argued that the element of naturalism has no less importance in Hume's philosophy. ..." Dodaj do notesu Filozofia, Europa, Wielka Brytania, Historia nowo¿ytna Hume David (1711-1776), szkocki filozof i historyk.
Wskazywa³ te¿, ¿e prawdy wiary s± niedowodliwe i ¿e niemo¿liwa jest racjonalna teoria Boga - postulowa³ badanie religii z punktu widzenia psychologii i historii.
