ज्ञानकोश: - The Indological Knowledgebase Hypatia of Alexandria (in greek: ) (b? d. ) was a neo-Platonic philosopher , mathematician, and teacher who lived in Alexandria , then a Greek settlement. Several works are attributed to her by later sources, including commentaries on Diophantus 's Arithmetica , on Apollonius 's Conics and on Ptolemy 's works, but none have survived. Letters to her by her pupil Synesius give an idea of her intellectual milieu. She was murdered in March 415 by a Christian mob, led by a cleric named Peter, for reasons which are still debated. She was the daughter of Theon , the last fellow of the Museum of Alexandria, which was adjacent to or included the main Library of Alexandria . Hypatia did not teach in the Museum, but received her pupils in her own private home. Theophilus , the patriarch of Alexandria, had destroyed some "pagan" temples in the city in , which may have included the Museum and certainly included the Serapeum (a temple and "daughter library" to the Great Library). In 391, Emperor

Hypatia Of Alexandria Hypatia was born in the year 370, in Alexandria, Egypt, and died March, 415, in Alexandria, Egypt. She was the first woman to make a substantial contribution to the development of mathematics. Hypatia was the daughter of the mathematician and philosopher Theon of Alexandria and it is fairly certain that she studied mathematics under the guidance of her father. Hypatia became head of the Platonist school in Alexandria in about 400 AD. There she taught mathematics and philosophy, particularly teaching the philosophy of Neoplatonism. Hypatia based her teachings on those of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, and Iamblichus who was the developer of Neoplatonism around 300 AD. Hypatia came to symbolize learning and science which the early Christians identified with paganism. However, among the students who she taught in Alexandria there were many prominent Christians, One of the most famous is Synesius of Cyrene, who was later to become the Bishop of Ptolemais. Many of the letters that Synesius wrote to Hypatia have been preserved and we see someone who was filled with admiration and reverence for Hypatia’s learning and scientific abilities. In 412, Cyril (later St Cyril) became patriarch of Alexandria. However, the Roman prefect of Alexandria was Prestes, and Cyril and Orestes became bitter rivals as church and state fought for control. Hypatia was a friend of Orestes and this , together with prejudice against her philosophical views which were seen by Christians to be pagen, led to Hypatia becoming the focal point of riots between Christians and non-Christians. Hypatia, Heath writes

But it was also a city wracked by religious conflict that finds echoes in our own time. Within this maelstrom we find Hypatia, a woman of great intellectual achievement and known as the world's greatest mathematician. Friend and foe alike noted her stunning beauty, her devoted celibacy, and her remarkable popularity as a teacher of mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. Yet her devotion to paganism and to the preservation of the rich mathematical heritage of her era threatened the Christian establishment, whose leaders believed that numbers were demonic and magical. For the heresy of continuing her work, her teaching, and her pursuit of the truth, Hypatia paid with her life at the hands of a Christian mob. Some contemporary sources claim that St. Cyril, bishop of Alexandria, ordered her death.

Physics Help and Math Help - Physics Forums Other Sciences Social Sciences PDA View Full Version : Fascinating women in history Type 7 Who are your favorites? I'm hoping to discover some new ones, but even the most well known ones are welcome. For instance I've got a thing for Joan of Arc. Of all the women in history, she would be the one I'd most like to converse with. But first I'd like to talk about another fascinating woman.
Theodora (500-548)
She fascinates me because of her astounding rise from the lowest social stratum to being the wife of the Emperor Justinian. In her own time she was valued for her acute intelligence and perspicacity, with most sources I've read saying she was accepted as an intellectual equal and advisor by Justinian. Her strength of resolve is credited with saving the empire from collapse during one crisis; she kept her head when Justinian and all others lost theirs. She never forgot where she came from and worked to better the lives of the lower class, especially women.
My opinion: Theodora had street-smarts and street-toughness born of hardship, deprivation and public scorn. Having nowhere and no one else to go to for help, she found within herself the independence, the intelligence, and the indomitable will to survive and to make her life great.

Hypatia of Alexandria (A.D. 370 – 415)
A martyr to feminine intellect.
H y patia of Alexandria is the earliest woman scientist whose life is well documented; she was also the last scientist of the Golden Age of Pericles, before enlightenment gave way to the Dark Ages. Her martyrdom has had more of an impact on the history than her inventions, although the hydroscope itself—the first laboratory instrument to measure the specific gravity of liquids—was a breakthrough. Born in Alexendria in A.D. 370, Hypatia came into a rarefied intellectual world. Her father, Theon, was a mathematician and astronomer at the Museum at Alexandria, and Hypatia was his prize pupil. She studied in Athens and Italy, and she became a lecturer and writer in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, astronomy and mechanics. Her classes were attended by students from throughout the known world, and her treatise on algebra, Arithmetica
