Definitions and the Tree of Porphyry
The Form of a Definition by genus and differentia
Each definition takes the form:
  • Definiendum df differentia + genus
where the definiendum is a species (or genus), and the definiens is the formula that consists of the differentia + the genus (or super-genus). Thus, just as a species is defined in terms of its genus and a differentia that marks it off from other species of that genus, each genus is defined in terms of its super-genus and a differentia that marks it off from other coordinate genera falling under that super-genus.
Some of the definitions embodied in the tree above
  • Body = df material substance
  • Living thing = df animate body
  • Animal = df sensitive living thing
  • Human = df rational animal
Fully explicit definitions
In a fully explicit definition, each definable term ( definiendum ) is replaced by its definiens . Thus, the fully explicit definition of human will be:
  • Human = df rational sensitive animate material substance
This is obtained from the compressed definition above by successively replacing each definable term ( definiendum ) in the definition with its definiens df definiens df definiendum df definiens Metaph.

Porphyry: On the Life of Plotinus and the Arrangement of his Work
from Plotinus: The Enneads translated by Stephen MacKenna Typed by Owlsmirror/crows January 2004 1. Plotinus, the philosopher our contemporary, seemed ashamed of being in the body. So deeply rooted was this feeling that he could never be induced to tell of his ancestry, his parentage, or his birthplace. He showed, too, an unconquerable reluctance to sit to a painter of a sculptor, and when Amelius persisted in urging him to allow of a portrait being made he asked him, 'Is it not enough to carry about this image in which nature has enclosed us? Do you really think I must also consent to leave, as a desired spectacle to posterity, an image of the image?' In view of this determined refusal Amelius brought his friend Carterius, the best artist of the day, to the Conferences, which were open to every comer, and saw to it that by long observation of the philosopher he caught his most striking personal traits. From the impressions thus stored in mind the artist drew a first sketch; Amelius made various suggestions towards bringing our the resemblance, and in this way, without the knowledge of Plotinus, the genius of Carterius gave us a lifelike portrait. 2. Plotinus was often distressed by an intestinal complaint, but declined clysters, pronouncing the use of such remedies unbecoming in an elderly man: in the same way he refused such medicaments as contain any substance taken from wild beasts or reptiles: all the more, he remarked, since he could not approve of eating the flesh of animals reared for the table.

See, however, whether all the passions of the soul in brutes, are not similar to ours; for it is not the province of man alone to apprehend juices by the taste, colors by the sight, odors by the smell, sounds by the hearing, cold or heat, or other tangible objects, by the touch; but the senses of brutes are capable of the same perceptions. Nor are brutes deprived of sense because they are not men, as neither are we to be deprived of reason, because the Gods, if they possess it, are rational beings. With respect to the senses, however, other animals appear greatly to surpass us; for what man can see so acutely as a dragon? (for this is not the fabulous Lynceus). And hence the poets denominate 'to see' drakein 9. It must be demonstrated, therefore, that there is a rational power in animals, and that they are not deprived of prudence. And in the first place, indeed, each of them knows whether it is imbecile or strong, and, in consequence of this, it defends some parts of itself, but attacks with others. Thus the panther uses its teeth, the lion its nails and teeth, the horse its hoofs, the ox its horns, the cock its spurs, and the scorpion its sting; but the serpents in Egypt use their spittle (whence also they are called ptuades 17. Each of the ancients, likewise, who had been prosperously nursed by animals, boasted more of this than of their parents and educators. Thus, one boasted of having been nursed by a she-wolf, another by a hind, another by a she-goat, another by a bee. But Semiramis gloried in having been brought up by doves, Cyrus in being nursed by a dog, and a Thracian in having a swan for his nurse, who likewise bore the name of his nurse. Hence also, the Gods obtained their surnames, as Bacchus that of

Letter to Anebo
On the Mysteries
An analysis
Introduction
Letter to Anebo Epistula ad Anebonem On the Mysteries De mysteriis ) are two of the most important religious and philosophical documents of Late Antiquity. Porphyry and Iamblichus were both highly esteemed and influential Pagan Neoplatonic philosophers whose views, especially their religious views, have not tended to receive a fair and unprejudiced treatment, and this is particularly true of Iamblichus. Oddly enough, despite the reputations of these documents, a careful analysis will show that neither of them are primarily concerned with magic. What they are concerned with is traditional Pagan religion, its apparent contradictions, and its relationship to philosophy.

Porphyry Granite Cobblestones Porphyry is a very hard extrusive igneous rock consisting of large-grained crystals, such as feldspar or quartz, dispersed in a fine-grained feldspathic matrix or groundmass. The groundmass may have invisibly small crystals or the individual crystals may be easily distinguished as in granite. Porphyry refers to the "texture" of igneous rocks (just as "satin" refers to a type of fabric rather than the fiber it's made from). Porphyry deposits are formed when a column of rising molten magma is cooled in two stages. In the first stage, the magma is cooled slowly deep in the earth's crust, creating the large crystal grains. In the final stage, the magma is cooled rapidly at a relatively shallow depth or as it erupts from a volcano. Porphyry granite cobblestones are available in sizes 4" x 4" with a thickness of 1" to 3" depending on the project requirement. Other cobblestone sizes and random lenths cut to size are also available. Minimum delivery is one container or truckload A 20ft container of 4" x 4" at 1" to 2" thickness will cover aproxiamtely 2,000+ sq ft. Installation in a mortar bed is recommended.

PORPHYRY ON CHRISTIANITY (270CE)
Porphyry of Tyre (232-305CE) Was one of the more prominent pagan intellectuals to question the claims of the early Christian church. He had been a student of a school run by Plotinus in Rome. After Plotinus' death, Porphyry developed a distaste for what he thought of as the superstitions of the empire. He wrote a book discussing the defects of the cults called Pro Anebo. Porphyry was said to have heard Origin's preaching in his youth, and to have found him lacking in philosophical consistency. He is also known to have studied the Hebrew scriptures, especially the prophets. His book, Against the Christians, (Kata Christian), was written some time after 270CE and remained popular until 448, when his fifteen-book Kata, along with various books from other authors, were sentenced to be burned. What very little we know of his work come to us preserved in the writings of Eusebius, Apollinarius, and, primarily, the Apocritus of Macarius Magnes.
The following excerpts are taken from Porphyry's Against the Christians: The Literary Remains , translated by R. Joseph Hoffman, Prometheus Books, 1994. Click on the link to order this book from Amazon.com.

A type of volcanic rock consisting of large-grained crystals such as feldspar or quartz, which is formed by a slow cooling process of igneous materials, the stone is valued for its aesthetically pleasing appearance. The term "porphyry" itself refers to the purplish red hues of the stone; in Latin, porphyry means purple. More Info

Porphyry's chemical and mineral composition determine its high compression breaking point, resistance to chemical agents, and low "wearability." The stone is the most popular paver in Europe, and is favored for its flexibility in design, beauty, durability and low maintenance requirements. The stone is by far one of the most durable pavers in the world. In fact, porphyry has been used internationally to create popular projects, such as the Olympic stadium in Munich, Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, the underground and market square in Paris, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and the military cemetery in Hawaii. While porphyry has become a popular paver today, it was originally used for sarcophaguses, busts, vases and columns. The stone that was extracted in the Egyptian desert in the mountain Jebel Dhokan is known as Imperial Red porphyry or Ancient Red porphyry.

PORPHYRY IIopc pcos) (A.D. 233-c. 304), Greek scholar, historian, and Neoplatonist, was born at Tyre , or Batanaea in Syria . He studied grammar and rhetoric under Cassius Longinus . His original name was Malchus (king), which was changed by his tutor into Porphyrius (clad in purple ), a jesting allusion to the colour of the imperial robes (cf. porphyrogenitus, born in the purple). In 262 he went to Rome , attracted by the reputation of Plotinus , and for six years devoted himself to the study of Neoplatonism . Having injured his health by overwork, he went to live in Sicily for five years. On his return to Rome, he lectured on philosophy and endeavoured to render the obscure doctrines of Plotinus (who had died in the meantime) intelligible to the ordinary understanding. His most distinguished pupil was Iamblichus . When advanced in years he married Marcella, a widow with seven children and an enthusiastic student of philosophy. Nothing more is known of his life, and the date of his death is uncertain. Of his - numerous works on a great variety of subjects the following are extant: Life of Plotinus and an exposition of his teaching in the 'A40P 7 .cac

Hurdal Molybdenum-Porphyry Deposit, Norway (100%)
Property description and location The deposit was first discovered in 1979 by Norsk Hydro, who conducted initial geochemical and geophysical investigations and drilled 24 core holes totalling 10.200 m. The project, however, was abandoned in 1982 due to low Molybdenum prices, The Hurdal deposit is a typical molybdenum-porphyry with similarities to the Climax and Henderson deposits of the Western United States. The mineralization occurs with quartz in veinlets and fissures cutting alkaline granitic rocks, and is locally associated with intense sericite and potassium feldspar alterations. The mineralization was deposited during a sequence of subvolcanic intrusive events.
