It has been said that during the 20th century, man harnessed the "power of the atom." We made atomic bombs and generated electricity by nuclear power. We even split the atom into smaller pieces called subatomic particles.

Atomic Physics: Subtle investigations into the dance of light and matter

By: Jeff Sherman
Physicist and Noble Laureate Richard Feynman believed that the single most important discovery of modern science was that all ordinary matter is made of atoms: discrete collections of nuclear matter (protons, neutrons) and a cloud of surrounding electrons measuring billionths of a meter in size. Normally atoms are studied in large quantities, but recent advancements in technology allow us to isolate, trap, and study one atom at a time.
The implications of this achievement are astounding: clocks accurate enough to lose just one second over the lifetime of the universe, tests of fundamental symmetries of nature, and the possibility of computers that take advantage of quantum mechanics to exponentially expand our computational power.
My talk will cover (and can focus more highly on, if requested):
* A modern description of the atom and motivation for its study
* A tour of experimental tools used to study single atoms (lasers, vacuums, computers)
* Atom and ion traps, past discoveries and future projects

Atomic physics (or atom physics) is the field of physics that studies atoms as isolated systems comprised of electrons and an atomic nucleus . It is primarily concerned with the arrangement of electrons around the nucleus and the processes by which these arrangements change. This clearly includes ions as well as neutral atoms and, unless otherwise stated, for the purposes of this discussion it should be assumed that the term atom includes ions.

An attosecond is 10-18 seconds long, or, expressed in another way: an attosecond is related to a second as a second is related to the age of the universe, says Johan Mauritsson, an assistant professor in atomic physics at the Faculty of Engineering, Lund University. He is one of seven researchers behind the study, which was directed by him and Professor Anne LHuillier. (EurekAlert!)

ATOMIC PHYSICS - ULTRA COLD ATOMS COLLABORATORS
    • Dr. Lene Hau - Rowland Institute for Science
DESCRIPTION Optical Matter and Binding Professor Golovchenko's recent involvement in laser-matter interaction dates back to his development of the concept of "Optical Matter" reported in reference (1). This work shows how dielectric matter can be organized in optical standing waves created by the interference of laser created intense multiple plane waves. Also studied and observed for the first time was the forces and light induced binding between dielectric objects induced by the exchange of real photons (reference (2)). Subsequent work focused on the experimental and theoretical opportunities made available by the recent development of laser and other methods to obtain ultra cold atoms. Cold Atom Atomic Transport - Electrical and Optical Binding Theoretical work has focused on the development of De Broglie wave optics of cold atoms. Reference (3) contains a study of the quantum mechanical and classical regimes associated with the radial binding of very cold atoms to a charged wire (charged by ac voltages) via the interaction induced through the atomic polarizability of the atom. Motion along the wire if free. The challenge is to create "co-ax cable" for cold atom transport. The classical regime exhibits various forms of stability and transitions to chaos. Quantum mechanical motion shows how instability is reflected in statistical quantum lifetimes of quasi bound states.
