The FASOR in the image is used for laser guide star experiments. It is tuned to D2A hyperfine component of the sodium D line and used to excite sodium atoms in the mesospheric upper atmosphere .       Laser Physics
      Our laser physics research concentrates on diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers. They are compact and efficient laser sources that typically operate in the gaussian TEM mode. Standard Q-switching techniques of DSSP lasers provide a convenient way to generate relatively short ( ~1 ns) and energetic pulses (~100 µJ) with high peak power (~100 kW). Such pulses find use in microprocessing and patterning of materials, materials research (e.g. laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, LIBS), ranging and generation of new wavelengths based on nonlinear effects in crystals or optical fibers.
      Supercontinuum sources based on DPSS lasers
      E. Räikkönen and S. C. Buchter Supercontinuum (SC) sources produce extremely bright, spatially coherent broadband light. They have applications in spectroscopy, imaging, and characterization of fiber-optical components. SC light is produced by launching high peak power laser pulses into a material having a nonlinear response to the applied optical field. Materials in the form of optical fibers are especially interesting because the long interaction lengths make even small nonlinearities to become important. We have developed techniques to make use of cheap passively Q-switched DPSS lasers as pump sources to generate SC at the visible wavelengths. Two different approaches have been taken. The first source is based on dual-wavelength pumping of a specially designed microstructured optical fiber using a miniature passively Q-switched, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser (1064/532 nm). The effect of cascaded cross-phase modulation between the two pump wavelengths leads to the formation of a smooth continuum of blue light. The second source is based on using a passively Q-switched laser to pump a miniature Titanium-Sapphire laser. The Ti:Sa laser produces high peak power pulses at 800 nm. When coupled into a suitable microstructured optical fiber, a smooth continuum of visible light is produced.

Publications Physics PhD students Chris Rawle and Chris Lee observe pulsed output from a novel laser system The Laser Physics and Nonlinear Optics Group aims to develop narrowband tunable coherent sources in the mid-infrared and infrared regions. These sources are useful for characterising gases by their rotation and vibration absorption peaks either in a lab or field situation. Optical parametric oscillators (OPO) are good candidates for such sources due to their wide band tunability; however, existing methods for tuning OPO’s are cumbersome. Research is concentrated around developing tunable pump sources for OPOs. These devices would provide fast, accurate and agile tunability. Contact: Don Warrington (Physics)

Laser Physics, Mediphotonics and Quantum Optics
Laser spectroscopic techniques have been pioneered at City College and are being used to study dynamical properties of a variety of physical and biological systems. Several laboratories cited in the research sections above make extensive use of laser-scattering and laser-based diagnostic techniques. Beyond this, City College has a comprehensive research program in quantum optics and applied quantum phenomenology. The Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers encompasses eight laser laboratories located on the second floor of the Science building and the fifth floor of the Engineering building. These laboratories are fully equipped with state-of-the-art femtosecond lasers and instrumentation for modern fast kinetic picosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy. The director of the Institute is Professor Robert Alfano. The research of IUSL is supported by grants for pure and applied science from a broad variety of agencies and industrial organizations. Seven postdoctoral research associates and thirty graduate students work on topics in semiconductor properties, microstructures, polymers, laser-system development, nonlinear optics, signal processing, optical computation and ultrafast phenomena. In recent work, the carrier dynamics in GaAs heterostruc-tures, and phonon relaxation rates in liquids and solids have been studied using nonlinear optics techniques (forward four-wave mixing, Raman-induced phase conjugation). Furthermore, researchers at IUSL made the first observation of the cross phase modulation of a second-harmonic pulse from an intense, primary picosecond pulse propogating in a non-linear crystal. They have also constructed a picosecond-laser-driven Sagnac interferometric switch for implementing various optical logic and arithmetic functions.

Knowledge is assumed of the usual half-year introduction of quantum mechanics found in undergraduate physics curricula. The material can be covered in two semesters, or, alternatively, the first part (Chaps 1-13) can be used as a one-semester course in which quantum mechanical aspects of the electromagnetic field are ignored. Each chapter is accompanied by problems that illustrate the text and give useful (occasionally new) results.Existing laser media are intrinsically quantum mechanical and are most easily studied with the quantum theory. Understanding the laser along these lines enlivens ones understanding of quantum mechanics itself. In fact, the material constitutes a viable, applied alternative for the usual second and third semesters of quantum mechanics.
