Interference experiments, such as Young's Slits (see below) can only be explained if we assume light is a wave. However, the photoelectric effect can only be explained if light is a particle. So what is light - particle or wave? The best thing to remember is that both waves and particles are nothing more than physical models for explaining our observations. For example, someone might think of counting apples when they are learning basic arithmetic; this does not mean that numbers are apples, only that we can think of them as such in certain specific circumstances. When we get to the concept of negative numbers, using apples as a model breaks down unsurprisingly. Electrons are particles, but produce apparent interference patterns by diffracting. To produce an interference pattern, you must have a wavelength. This gives more evidence of Wave-particle duality.

Because I love telling stories, and want to tell my daughter some I make up, but I know that the texts you refer to are very rich, and beautiful. I need to do more reading up on those areas. In my attempts to better speak the language of Spanish, I am learning that reading through blockbuster novels in Spanish, even when you don't understand the words, helps you gather a subconscious understanding of syntax and grammar. I am using a few sources, as I am wont to do, at once. Something for subconscious absorption, something for pronunciation, something for vocab, etc. A quick Google Search can help you. But I have found a very useful source at spanishpodcasting.com. You can subscribe to the free podcasts, though they are not completely for beginners.

ChemGuy I am trying to learn/relearn QM after a lengthy layoff (10+ years). I have had calc and diff EQ and partial Diff EQ but to be honest I don't remember the details anymore. For example I don't remember any of the standard solutions to integrals. I understand the principles but am just out of practice of actually doing it. I can follow along in a text ok but don't ask me to independantly solve the problems... the memory is just not there. I had actually taken a grad class or two on Quantum Chemistry so I know I could do it at one time! Here is the question. Is it possible to learn QM and QFT principles without the detail technical ability? I have access to text books but it would take forever to go back over them to bring myself back up to math speed. I am not looking to be a master on these subjects but I am trying to be able to understand grad level discussions. Thanks.
