What is a plasma? A plasma is an ionized, electrically conducting gas of charged particles. For an ionized gas to qualify as a plasma the density of charged particles must simultaneously satisfy two important criteria: (i) the density should be sufficiently high that the long range Coulomb force be a significant factor in determining the statistical properties of the particles; (ii) it should be low enough that the Coulomb force of a near neighbour particle be much less than the cumulative long range Coulomb force exerted by the many distant particles. The most characteristic aspect of the plasma state is perhaps that the particles exhibit collective behaviour because of the long range nature of the Coulomb force. Above a temperature of about most matter exists in an ionized state. For this reason the plasma state is frequently called the fourth state of matter. That is, if one adds heat to a solid one obtains a liquid, add heat to a liquid and one obtains a gas, add sufficient heat to a gas and the atoms themselves become ionized and one obtains a plasma. Such high temperatures are, however, not necessary, for a plasma to exist. Provided there is a mechanism for ionizing the gas and the density is sufficiently low for recombination to be slow, a plasma can exist at relatively low temperatures. This is frequently the case in laboratory produced plasmas and, indeed, in the Earth's own ionospherean example of a plasma produced by photoionization of the tenous outer layers of the atmosphere.

Space Physics Focus
Focus Leader: Reiner Friedel friedel@lanl.gov Proposals are solicited that advance theoretical research, computational research, and/or observational research into the plasma environment of the Earth's atmosphere and into processes that affect this environment. Research on the transport of plasma and energy from the Sun through interplanetary space to the Earth is also encouraged. These include the interaction of various plasma populations and the coupling of microscopic and macroscopic phenomena. The following topics are covered:
  • solar dynamics responsible for the solar wind magnetohydrodynamics of the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere magnetospheric substorms magnetotail current sheet dynamics dusty plasmas magnetospheric models (near-Earth plasma sheet through into the inner magnetosphere) and their use of LANL data for either boundary conditions, assimilation or validation physics affecting the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems statistics and predictability of magnetospheric substorms physics governing satellite to ground communications
In addition this year we solicit proposals covering the following areas:
  • solar wind interaction with planetary magnetosphere ("Planetary Space physics") such as Jupiter or Saturn

    A Great Observatory
Earth's space environment traditionally has been explored as a set of independent parts - the interplanetary region, the magnetosphere, the ionosphere, and the upper atmosphere. Past science missions have advanced the understanding of these geospace components as individual parts. But even from the earliest space-based studies, scientists have known that these components are highly interactive. To understand the system as a whole, there was a need for comprehensive, quantitative study of the energy chain from the Sun's interior to Earth's atmosphere.
LASP has been strongly involved in the International Solar Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) program, which has coordinated the activities of an armada of spacecraft, ground-based observatories, and theoretical modeling centers. This assemblage represents a "great observatory" for space physics, providing both a global view of the Sun-Earth system and a mgnificently detailed view of its physical processes.
    A Laboratory in Rocket's Reach
Gases of charged particles (plasmas) fill much of the known cosmos, and the interactions of such charged gases determine the behavior of matter within our solar-terrestrial system. But the spatial, temporal, and density scales we can explore in space are much different from those produced in earthbound laboratories. Therefore, our solar-terrestrial system - which is composed of dynamic and complex systems of moving particles, magnetic fields, and electrical currents - serves as a nearby example of what probably happens throughout our whole universe. It is a unique laboratory for investigating the natural processes that occur in nearly all astrophysics and it is a laboratory that we can reach relatively easily with rockets and spacecraft.

Was Einstein Wrong? Space Station Research May Find Out
ScienceDaily (May 30, 2002) See also: The theory, introduced in 1905, holds that if an observer moves at a uniform speed, no matter how fast or in what direction, the laws of physics and the speed of light are always the same. For example, if you stand still and drop a coin, it will fall straight down. Similarly, if you drop a coin inside a car while you're driving down the freeway at a steady speed, it will also fall straight down. However, recent theories attempting to combine gravity and particle physics suggest that relativity might not always apply; changes in space and time may occur that could not be measured easily on Earth. "The International Space Station will have ultra-sensitive clocks on board, and it is a good place to test the theory," said Dr. Alan Kostelecky, professor of physics at Indiana University, Bloomington. "By comparing extremely precise clocks that can operate under zero gravity, minuscule changes in the ticking rate might be found as the spacecraft moves around Earth." This would violate Einstein's theory, which says there should be no change if different clocks in the same gravity environment are compared. "Finding such changes would cause an upheaval in the science community and revolutionize our thinking about the fundamental structure of space and time," he added. "It would lead to insight about how our universe formed and how nature operates."

    Physics of Space Plasma Activity
Karl Schindler Space plasma is so hot that the atoms break up into charged particles which then become trapped and stored in magnetic fields. When critical conditions are reached the magnetic field breaks up, releasing a large amount of energy and causing dramatic phenomena. The largest space plasma activity events observed in the solar system occur on the Sun, when coronal mass ejections expel several billion tons of plasma mass into space. This book provides a coherent and detailed treatment of the physical background of large plasma eruptions in space. It provides the background necessary for dealing with space plasma activity, and allows the reader to reach a deeper understanding of this fascinating natural event. The book employs both fluid and kinetic models, and discusses the applications to magnetospheric and solar activity. This will form an interesting reference for graduate students and academic researchers in the fields of astrophysics and plasma physics. Request Examination Copy Learn more
