Z Edwin Fischer Biography Edwin Fischer (October 6, 1886 - January 24, 1960) was a Swiss classical pianist and conductor. He is widely regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, particularly in the traditional Germanic repertoire of such composers as Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. He is also regarded as one of the finest piano teachers of modern times.
Fischer was born in Basel and studied music first there, and later in Berlin. He first came to prominence as a pianist following World War I. In 1926 he became conductor of the Lübeck Musikverein, Lübeck and later conducted in Munich. In 1932 he formed his own chamber orchestra, and was one of the first to be interested in presenting music of the baroque in an historically accurate way. Though his performances were not particularly historically accurate when compared to similar performances today, he did conduct concertos by the likes of Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from the keyboard, which at the time was most unusual.
In 1932 he returned once again to Berlin, succeeding Artur Schnabel in a teaching role at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. In 1942 he moved back to Switzerland, temporarily putting his career on hold through World War II. Following the war, he began to perform again, as well as giving masterclasses in Lucerne, which were attended by a number of later prominent pianists, Alfred Brendel and Daniel Barenboim among them.

Edwin Fischer (1886–1960). Swiss pianist specializing in German music from Bach to Brahms, settled in Berlin and taught at the Stern Conservatory 1905–14, later serving as conductor of the L¼beck Verein 1926–28 and the Munich Bachverein 1928–32. In 1931 he succeeded Schnabel at the Hochschule f¼r Musik in Berlin. He was author of books on Bach and the Beethoven piano sonatas after World War II. No correspondence between Fischer and Schenker is known. Schenker refers to him in his diary in 1920 and 1925 (see Federhofer Nach Tageb¼chern , pp. 117, 229). Nacido en el seno de una familia de músicos, fue alumno de Hans Huber en el Conservatorio de su ciudad natal entre 1896 y 1904. Posteriormente se trasladó a Berlín para tomar lecciones de Martin Krause, que había sido alumno de Franz Liszt. Su interés por la música de cámara le llevó a formar un trío con Enrico Mainardi (chelo) y G. Kulenkampff (violín), al que después sustituyó Schneiderhan. Fischer rechazó el virtuosismo fácil propio de su época y centró su repertorio en los grandes clásicos como J. S. Bach, Mozart y Beethoven, aunque también realizó grabaciones de Schubert. Sus trabajos discográficos junto al director W. Furtwängler, de quien estrenó su Concierto para piano , continúan siendo versiones interpretativas de referencia. Destacó por mostrar siempre gran fidelidad a la partitura original, en una época en la que la interpretación musical estaba marcada por la influencia del Romanticismo; de esta manera logró versiones precisas y cuidadas de las obras dieciochescas. En su faceta como director fue un gran intérprete de la música sinfónica de Haydn y Mozart. Se hizo cargo del Musikverein de Lübeck y del Bachverein de Múnich (1926). Además, fue de los pioneros en recuperar la tradición de dirigir y tocar como solista al mismo tiempo obras de Bach y Mozart con su propia orquesta de cámara en Berlín. A partir de mediados de los años cincuenta, y debido a problemas de artritis, abandonó paulatinamente los recitales y giras.
