Hess, Dame Myra Hess, Dame Myra (1890-1965), British pianist, born in London. Hess became a nationally admired performer immediately on her debut, a performance of Beethovenâs Piano Concerto no. 4, with Thomas Beecham conducting, in 1907. From then on she became particularly associated with this work, which she played on many occasions through her career. She performed a vast range of music, giving the premieres of several works, including the Piano Sonata by Frank Bridge in 1925. From 1922 she became well known in the United States and toured regularly. She also performed as a duo with her friend, Irene Scharrer.
