Wednesday I was invited to attend the "forum" with pianist Jon Nakamatsu Steinway D . Nakamatsu is a Steinway artist. During this time of discussion, he talked about the one teacher he had from the time he was 6 until he won the Van Cliburn Competition in 1997. They also covered advice for young musicians. He mentioned several things that are key to upcoming performers: 1) "Think to yourself...'Where do I make my best music?' If it is here, on the stage in front of an audience, then that is where you belong. Then you are a performer. If there is a doubt, if you are unsure, then the stage is not for you." 2) "Don't worry, being a performing musician is not the only way to become a successful musician. These days there are so many outlets for musicians in the field, on stage and off. Those who use their musical knowledge to help them in broadcasting, or administrative work...there are hundreds of outlets. The stage is not the only one." 3) "It is ok to be afraid. Fear is a healthy human response to performing. If you think that we as soloists don't get nervous going out onstage, then you're wrong. We do.
